Some parents might still remember when BPA (bisphenol A) issue with the baby bottle many years back. It was an issue with one of the plastic material that leaches the BPA (bisphenol A) when sterilizing, BPA is linked to causing reproductive, immunity, and neurological problems, as well as an increased likelihood of Alzheimer's, childhood asthma, metabolic disease, type 2 diabetes, and cardiovascular disease. That material has been banned in many countries by the authorities. Well, this material of baby milk bottle is no longer exist.
Now, move forward and look at the type of material that the baby milk bottle is made from in the Malaysia market today. The common materials are divided into four types - Plastic, Silicone, Steel and Glass. Plastic is the most popular material, but few types of plastic a baby milk bottle made from such as PA, PP, PES and PPSU.
Plastic material is the most widely used material when it comes to the baby milk bottle. However, there are few types of plastic that a bottle are made from:-
Polypropylene is a rigid, crystalline thermoplastic, polypropylene produced from propene or propylene monomer. It's one of the cheapest and durable plastics available today and used in applications both as a plastic and a fibre in various industries.
Many brands widely use PP material, which could be due to cost and availability. One of the most significant features of this material is that it will not be transparent than other plastic material. This material will look a bit blurry in colour.
Polysulfone, also known as polyarylsulfone, is a class of engineering polymers with high thermal, oxidative and hydrolytic stability. They are amorphous, transparent thermoplastics that can be moulded, extruded, or thermoformed into various shapes.
The biphenyl sulfone group provides high thermal stability. It has high strength, high oxidation resistance, and excellent flame retardancy, making the polymer hard.
One feature of the PES is the yellowish colour due to the sulfur content. This material is clear compare to Polypropylene (PP) material.
PES plastics offer:
PPSU material (chemically known as polyphenylsulfone). PPSU plastic is an amorphous material with high glass transition temperature and low moisture absorption.
This material is so far among the best material for the baby milk bottle for plastic material because it has exceptional chemical resistance when exposed to high temperatures and corrosive media.
Glass bottles were being used to manufactured Milk bottle a long time ago. Glass does not leach or release any chemical once it is into shape and has excellent transparency.
The glass bottle has not been a favourite to some parents due to its weight and also that Glass will transfer the heat. Glass bottles are normally heavier than a plastic bottle. And when you are using a glass bottle, you will need to add accessories like bottle sleeves or a bottle insulator cover so that you will not feel hot when you are holding the bottle even the temperature for baby milk is at 40 degrees Celcius.
Most glass bottles are designed using the so-called "Borosilicate glass" material as it will not break into smaller pieces when it drops on the floor and breaks. It will reduce the messy incidents and thus much safer as Glass could be all over the floor when it breaks.
The glass bottle can last longer as it will scratch easily compare to a plastic bottle. Sometimes if the brushes you use are too rough or you wash using a hard material, the bottles will get scratches without you knowing it. If it happens, it might be hard to clean the line between scratch.
The silicone material is quite popular recently, but the cost is usually higher than the plastic material. Silicone has been widely used in many other industries, from automotive to toys. Most of the baby teats are made from Silicone material, or some are made from Latex material.
Some parents dislike Silicone's bottle because the material is too soft, holding a silicone bottle will require you to be gentle as you might squeeze the bottle too hard. Some parents review that the silicone bottle is not easily assembled back due to the softness; this usually happens when you need to assemble the bottle with the bottle ring.
Silicone has the following advantages:_
Many will know that steel is among the strongest material compare to plastic, glass and Silicone. Is steel the best material for the baby bottle?
Steel can only be deformed when it is hit hard. And steel will only melt at high temperature. Steel is among the most stable material for the making of the baby bottle. However, there are also disadvantages of the Stainless Steel baby milk bottle.
You will have to purchase additional sleeve or insulator for steel bottle because steel bottle will be difficult to hold as it will be hot even at 30 to 40-degree Celcius. It would be best if you held the bottle all the time at the sleeve area only so that you would not "burn" yourself holding the bottle at the wrong side of the bottle.
Another disadvantage of the steel bottle is that it is usually difficult to see how much water is in the bottle. Most steel bottle has the measurement, but it is only inside of the bottle.
Stainless steel bottle is nice when you first purchase and open it. The shape and the look might not look nice when the paint got scratches and might create a hygiene issue.
Which material is the best? Some will find plastic, some like glass, some like steel and some like Silicone. It is subjective to the individual when it comes to the type of material for the baby bottle.
We realize most parents are more into brands when selecting baby milk bottle. Most of us will trust that the material used to produce baby milk bottles is already studied properly by their trusted brand.
